Health Promotion and Advocacy
Overview
Health Promotion Starts With Us
CCCN national advocacy slogan is "Health Promotion starts with Us". Originally developed by the BC & Yukon Chapter of CCCN, this slogan encourages nurses to take care of their own cardiovascular health by increasing physical activity, minimizing stress, choosing healthy foods and choosing to be tobacco free. CCCN advocates that as healthcare professionals we have a responsibility to try to maintain our own cardiovascular health. In other words, to practice what we preach to our patients!
CCCN members are committed volunteers across the country, participating in numerous health promotion initiatives, as well as working collaboratively with the Heart and Stroke foundation at the local, provincial and national levels in promoting a heart healthy lifestyle for patients, their family members and the general public.
CCCN members participate in numerous HP initiatives such as organized group walks/runs and blood pressure clinics. In addition, health promotion committee members advocate for use of policies or guidelines established by other organizations such as the Canadian Hypertension Society's Blood Pressure guidelines or Sodium Policy and the Heart and Stroke Foundation's Health Check Symbol for Food labelling and Restaurant menu's.
National Health Promotion Committee
The National Health Promotion Committee is comprised of Health Promotion representatives from each of the ten provincial executive boards. CCCN's national committees meet face to face annually at the CCCN National Conference held in October as part of the Canadian Cardiovascular Congress. This is an opportunity for the committees to share and collaborate on issues and incentives that are taking place on provincial levels as well as to establish national priorities and focus.
Health Promotion at the CCCN Conference
Held as part of the Canadian Cardiovascular Congress, CCCN's Annual Scientific Sessions feature a Health Promotion Plenary Speaker invited to educate, motivate and challenge CCCN member to return to their various regions in Canada and continue to promote and participate in public health promotion activities and policy development with respect to cardiovascular health.
Throughout CCCN's program as well, Health Promotion streams of oral sessions and poster presentations share numerous initiatives and successful strategies that are assisting patients, family members, professional colleagues and the community at large to achieve their optimal cardiovascular health. In addition, a health promotion activity for members attending the conference occurs in conjunction with the health promotion plenary speaker.
