JAN ANGUS, PhD MScN BscN RN
Clinicians and clients in cardiovascular care encounter complex problems that are laden with meanings, interconnected with context, and require creative approaches to inquiry.
Qualitative methods are responsive to these issues and are increasingly employed in cardiovascular science. This session will deal with the following topics:
1) contributions of qualitative research to cardiovascular clinical practice,
2) issues in the design and implementation of qualitative research, and
3) a look at some exciting new trends in qualitative inquiry, such as metasynthesis and arts based research.
Dr. Jan Angus is an Associate Professor at the Lawrence S. Bloomberg, Faculty of Nursing and Adjunct Scientist at Toronto Rehabilitation Institute.
She is a Canadian Institutes of Health Research New Investigator.
Dr. Angus studies issues in gender, health, and access to health care using qualitative methods to examine the contextual influences on health related decisions and practices.
Her work is currently substantively focused on gender disparities in the opportunities, barriers and resources that differently condition: 1) attempts to modify cardiovascular risk modification, 2) access to health care, and 3) access to cancer screening.
This work draws on critical social theories and qualitative methodologies such as critical ethnography and photo-elicitation. She has received research funding from Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council.
