We would like to nominate Carol A. Galte for the Canadian Council of Cardiovascular Nurses Clinical Excellence Award. Carol is highly recognised as a valuable and well-respected team member within the Heart Centre at St. Paul's Hospital. She is known for her professionalism and dedication to patient care and in the development of cardiovascular health.

Throughout her career, Carol has maintained the highest level of professionalism in clinical care since graduating in 1984. To advance her practice, Carol continued her academic career by completing her Certificate in Critical Care, a Bachelor of Technology in nursing (with Honours), and most recently graduating in the first Family Nurse Practitioner Master of Science in Nursing program at the University of British Columbia in May 2005. She is currently employed fulltime as a Nurse Practitioner in acute cardiology at St. Paul's Hospital.

Carol has demonstrated a leadership role in her collaborative efforts in a multitude of projects. Within the Vancouver Coastal Health region, Carol developed and implemented a nursing patient educator role between the inpatient and outpatient setting for St. Paul's Hospital Heart Failure Clinic. Carol was also responsible for the implementation of a new nursing role for an inpatient/outpatient transition program for heart failure patients at Vancouver Hospital. In her new nurse practitioner position, Carol has written and submitted a proposal for the development of a module for cardiac palliative care within the Heart Centre at St. Paul's Hospital. She participates with the Providence Health Care Divisions of Cardiology and Geriatrics to provide education in patient care to other health care providers in percutaneous valve replacement.

At a provincial level, Carol was a faculty member for the Provincial Heart Failure Collaborative two-year project. She currently participates with the Ministry of Health to develop protocols for nurse practitioners within British Columbia. Carol also contributes to various committees for the College of Registered Nurses of British Columbia for the development of e-health programs. Carol participated as a panel member for the CCCN program for clinical guideline dissemination for heart failure at the 2006 Canadian Cardiovascular Congress.

Throughout her career, Carol has been a mentor and teacher to nursing students in all areas from the bedside to the classroom. Her enthusiastic and visionary outlook continues to inspire both students and professionals. She is known for her positive outlook, her frank encouragement, and the ability to motivate others. Most importantly, Carol displays an endless dedication and respect in the delivery of all patient care.

We believe that Carol Galte is a person well deserving of the Canadian Council of Cardiovascular Nurses 2007 Clinical Excellence Award.
